EPDI’s unique and highly interactive facilitation methods skills/approach vital to the achievement of the organisation’s objectives, is based on two complementary skills:

  1. Imaginal education/learning, a method that aims to change behaviour by changing an individual’s “image” of who they are and what is important to them.
  2. Technology of Participation (ToP), developed by the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) - a comprehensive system of facilitation methods that engage the creativity and commitment of a group in authentic dialogue, consensus-based decision making and action planning. Based on a proven set of tools and principles and on a model of human behaviour that cuts across people and cultures.

ToP methods hold the values of participation, creativity, teamwork, action and profound respect.
The Uniqueness of ToP

  • It is a universal human approach: ToP is a human method i.e. a process that is natural to human beings but which we are mostly unconscious of. It follows the natural thinking process of man, starting with concrete information, then moves through reflecting and interpreting to a decision. The method will work in any management system at any level of technology, at any time, at any place. It is not based on issues of right/wrong or good/bad and this fact encourages openness.
  • It has a transformational intent and result: The intent of ToP is transformation. Participants at ToP workshops release themselves from their own personal views, and hear, respect and understand the viewpoints and experiences of others. Everyone walks away with a different picture of life. There is no debating or defending of views. Rather, participants become part of a larger solution.
  • It is a transparent human methodology: All the content is supplied by the participants. The method protects the interests and concerns of everyone and does not promote experts, but teams in action. The facilitator remains neutral and transparent to the process.
  • It has high respect for the group and its wisdom: It has an unusually high degree of respect for the group and the individuals. There is no manipulation of the group and there is respect for the fact that all participants have wisdom. This brings out total participation.
